Natural promoters have evolved to control a specific gene in a certain cell, subject to pre-defined environmental conditions. Thus, they are not suited to industrial settings which do not always mimic the natural environment of the cell.

Most of the promoters in use today are based on promoters derived from human viruses, which are more efficient at driving gene expression compared to human, plant or animal promoters. Synpromics improves on viral promoters by increasing the yield of protein production and by increasing specificity and reliability of the promoters.
