Biotechnology can be defined as the commercialization of gene products. That means that central to each biotech product is a gene that needs to be controlled so that it can produce its corresponding protein.

One example is the drug Insulin, which is the current treatment for diabetes. Insulin is the product of a gene and is produced to large scale using genetic engineering methods. The insulin gene is placed next to a strong promoter and introduced into a micro-organism that turns the insulin gene into insulin protein in large amounts. The insulin protein is then purified, bottled and distributed for human use.

Synpromics has developed a more efficient means of designing promoters that can be used in processes such as these.
